AND GARDEN
As you probably know, we often have quite a bit of windy
weather in Southern Nevada, some even quite severe. When it occurs, our TV news
stations are often flooded with images of trees that come crashing down with
disastrous results, leaving perplexed homeowners wondering what to do. I can
give you some advice on what NOT to do.
Don’t be so quick to pay someone to simply chop that tree up
and haul it away. Depending on species, every fallen tree has a value; some of
our more exotic trees, growing in yards across the valley contain wood worth
multi-thousands of dollars. Did you know that a domestic Black Walnut tree
growing in the Midwest could yield retail lumber products in excess of
$10,000.00? ¼ cord of any hard wood containing low pine tar should be worth
$90.00 to $100.00 at firewood prices here in the Las Vegas Valley. If for
nothing else, the larger scraps and chips of Oak, Hickory, Almond, Mesquite,
Peach, Apple, Ash, and others are worth even more as BBQing. Even Professional
Landscapers should think twice before simply grinding these trees up. But, the
homeowner should also be aware, that the mature fallen, dead, or nuisance tree
in his yard could be worth enough to pay for its own removal. I knew of one
landscaping company that was paid $1000.00 to remove a twenty foot palm from a
neighbors yard, then delivered it the following day to a Major Strip Hotel for
$3000.00.

NEVADA
HAPPENINGS!
One of the most desolate highways in America, Nevada
93, runs north and south through the state. Traveling the back roads can
present wonderful adventures and enlightening surprises. About 90 miles north
of Las Vegas you’ll find Alamo and Phahranagat Valley.

This is an area of land that Las Vegas Public Officials
would like to rob of its natural resources.
With an abundant water source, the Phahranagat National Wildlife Refuge has
over 5,000 acres of open wetlands and lush green grasslands. An important stop
on the Great Pacific Migratory Route, thousands of migratory birds and
waterfowl fly through this area every year. Dozens of bird species can be found
in this long valley, and it is one of over 500 managed areas in the National
Wildlife Refuge system.

Las Vegas Comment:
“With its ever growing traffic jams, over crowded and under staffed schools, skyrocketing housing costs, rapidly depleting water supply, and its escalating taxes, I personally wonder if Las Vegas has not outgrown its own welcome matt?
I keep answering my own question with an empathic, “Yes!”
We moved here in 1982 because of the city’s freewheeling atmosphere and the independent can-do attitude of the people living here. Choose a lifestyle and personal goals. Freedom was the name of the game. Sinners or Saints could make their choice without judgment, or little ramification. Gambling, Sin, and excess built this town. But in 1982, it also had more churches per capita than any other American City.
It has become a place of gluttony; a city governed for Big Money Developers, not for Everyday Citizens. Local politicians seem perfectly satisfied doing the government’s business in an environment devoid of any public participation other businessmen seeking approval of their latest plan. They approve new homes for 100’s of families without even knowing beforehand whether they can hire a teacher to teach even a few of those newly arriving young students. If growth pays for itself, why are long time residents seeing higher and higher taxes? They brag about having no state income tax, but fees, licensing, and hidden taxes are higher than any state in the country, far surpassing any there might be in not having a small tax on personal income. Where else do you have to pay for a card in order to work? 1000’s of journeymen craftsmen in the construction and electrical trades, among others, will not even consider work in Nevada because of the proliferation of illegal aliens and under qualified non-union workers on every job site. Those who do come here to work know that this not only reduces their level of livelihood, but also puts their very lives in jeopardy on a daily basis.
As for Nevada’s water; where will it come from? Lake Meade, down nearly 80 feet, is at 56 percent capacity, and drawing down has devastated Lake Powell’s water level in Utah, which, at about 50 percent capacity, now resembles the look of a barren no-mans-land.
Waiting for the future rains and heavier snow packs to come seems like folly to me. The climate is warming worldwide, and no scientist that I have heard believes this to be a temporary quirk. Weather cycles come and go. Climatic changes don’t. Not in the manner the human mindset works. They can last millenniums or until the next ice age. Not smoking or driving some other vehicle type will not change the inevitable laws of our forever-changing universe. The politicians and Southern Nevada Water District want to bring water down from rural Nevada. In my humble opinion, this is little more than a pipe dream. I have visited the water rich valley around Alamo, NV, and it’s clearly evident at first look that this valley has already used up more of its own water than is environmentally prudent. The land of Northern Nevada is made up of both high-desert and alpine eco-systems. Neither fragile type could long withstand a major assault on its water supply from an expanding; multi-million populous like that of Las Vegas. Draining Northern Nevada as a stop-gap will not work in our state nearly as well as Los Angeles’s rape of Northern California’s much more abundant resources.
Even there, the Salton Sea is dying of high salinity. The more rare and unique, the most treasured beauty, the most fabulous places of mysterious wonderment will all die first; some with having ever been known.
Sadly, I really don’t believe there will be any solution to the problems arising ahead for this weed in the desert. Desert flowers are prolific for a period of time.............then disappear, waiting, waiting, year after year, for their time to come again. The laws of nature can be cruel. Ask the next Pharaoh you meet.
Though my wife and I reside in Vegas out of a certain necessity for now...........for a quieter, more peaceful life, keeping in touch with nature and still connected to old fashion friendly values, yet only a short drive to gambling in booming Jackpot, NV, Twin Falls, ID is my Dream City. Residing in the high desert country of south central Idaho’s Magic Valley, “The Land of 1000 Springs,” the Snake River, with its lush and green 400 feet deep canyon and two awe inspiring waterfalls form Twin Falls’ northern border. Swift moving Rock Creek, teaming with brown trout, cuts its shallow canyon through town from south to north, where it gushes over The Snake Canyon walls like An angry white comet of boiling mist streaming at ultra-velocity into the river so far below. The high, irrigated lands of the nearby countryside are laced with a system of river-like canals that provide life to the truly impressive agricultural development of an area that you would believe could never have grown much of anything, 200 years ago when Oregon Trail pioneer travelers first spied it. The Herculean task of scaling the massive canyon walls simply must have been the deciding factor in their stopping to settle here rather than continue on to Oregon as had been their original dream. To my mind, their engineering feats should be considered a marvel the world over today. I look across a sea of emerald green farmland as far as the eye can see, and it makes me think of Holland. But with typical American egotism, what I think is...is that the people of that country, with its little canals and quaint old windmills, haven’t seen anything if they have never seen this! The very least you should do, is visit one time.”
